Starting in the 2024-2025 school year we will be running on a 4-day school week.

"One of the pleasant things about small town life is that everyone, whether rich or poor, liked or disliked, has some kind of a role and place in the community."

- Edward Abbey

Why should I consider this "small town"?

Our class sizes, coupled with the offerings available mean that we are large enough to meet your needs, but small enough to care.

Community: East Union CSD is comprised of five separate small towns, each bringing their own charm. Enjoy fall activities through Afton’s “Autumn Days” or through Lorimor’s “Watermelon Days”. In the winter, you can stay warm at the “Afton Extravaganza” located right here on the school’s campus. During the summer months, the Afton Community Club offers “Tuesday Nights in the Park” with a variety of activities including kids craft night, STEM night, movie night, and live music that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.

Location: The five towns of Afton, Arispe, Lorimor, Shannon City, and Thayer cover a majority of Union County. The district is located within an area that boasts small town charm, but is surrounded by larger communities with all necessary amenities. Creston, Winterset, and Osceola are all within 25 miles. Interstate 35 is a short drive away allowing quick access to the Des Moines area.

Recreation: Nestled within these five communities are multiple state parks where people can go to enjoy the outdoors and experience a wide variety of nature activities. Enjoy kayaking, boating, camping, and trapshooting at 3 Mile Lake throughout the summer months or make the short drive to 12 Mile Lake to enjoy fishing. Many parks within Union County also offer a variety of nature trails for those that just want to enjoy the scenery.

Environment Supportive of Professional Growth: We believe in lifelong learning and supporting our staff members in personal growth. As you begin your career, our mentor program provides first and second year teachers with peer assistance, support, and guidance. Career teachers enjoy the benefits of Professional Learning Communities which provide grade and/or subject level support for all teachers. The curriculum and instruction department provides all teachers with strong, subject specific professional development.

Student-Centric Approach: At East Union, we believe in providing hands-on, immersive learning experiences. We encourage students to learn by doing. Most importantly, we believe in having fun!

Why Choose us? Our rural community grants us the opportunity to have smaller class sizes which allows our teachers to develop stronger bonds and relationships that promote a positive learning environment. Through our online program, secondary teachers have the ability to oversee and/or develop their own courses based on their passions and interests. If you are passionate about education, dedicated to making a positive impact, and excited to be part of a community that values excellence, we invite you to explore the various career opportunities available at East Union CSD.
