Kanyon Huntington received many accolades during his time at East Union before joining the ranks of alumni in May of 2021. FFA has become a huge part of Huntington's life. Today we got to go on the journey with Huntington as several guest speakers reflected on their memories with Kanyon.
Our East Union FFA Officers opened our welcome home celebration with the FFA opening ceremony followed by freshman Mia Tallmon with the FFA Creed.
Current East Union FFA Chapter President Audrey Young shared her memories about Kanyon before opening the floor to Kanyon's little brother Bentley Huntington. Bentley, a 4th grader at East Union, brought tears to many eyes. Bentley is so proud of his big brother, even if he doesn't get to see him as often.
Mr. Clark, band and chorus teacher as well as Mrs. Thompson, secondary school counselor shared treasured memories of Kanyon's time as a student of East Union. Kanyon didn't know a stranger and if he did, they wouldn't be strangers for long. Kanyon's kind heart, positive personality, and determination were traits mentioned often. Kanyon is a student many East Union students look up to for advice on any matter.
Other speakers were Cindy Merten Meyerdirk, Janet Wasteny, Mikenna Cass, Paige Hudson, Danika Schultes, and Hannah Wisniewski, Trenton Eilander, Scott Johnson, Logan Schmitt, and Emma Poppe. Students also learned that not only was Kanyon 1 of 35 looking to serve in the National officer capacity, but he went through the interview process over a course of 6 days.
Lastly, current State FFA South Central Vice President Elizabeth Hadley spoke a few words on memories and journeys she has taken on FFA with Kanyon. Being referred to as the "female version of Kanyon Huntington" is the highest honor. Kanyon has been Hadley's biggest cheerleader through her FFA journey. Elizabeth Hadley is also an East Union alumni, graduating in 2023.
Mr. Cooley, FFA advisor said it best today. Kanyon we all believed! We wish you nothing but the best of luck in your National Officer journey. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle! We are so proud of you! You have shown all of us in our little community that no dream is too big if you are willing to believe and work for it.
