ASPIRE Super Kids: Partners & Possibilities

Wednesday, December 20th, artist Blake Schnormeier returned to visit the East Union ASPIRE Super Kids. This month he taught the kids about “sgraffito”. Sgraffitio is an Italian word which means scratched. In visual arts, it is a low-relief carving technique that can be used in painting, pottery, or glass.

Blake prepared clay squares and then covered them with a thin layer of slip. He showed them how to scratch the superficial surface in such a way that a pattern or shape would make the lower color emerge. The kids came up with a variety of unique designs. Blake took their creations to the studio to be fired and with bring them back at his next visit in January.
