Saturday, February 24th was an amazing day in our small but mighty town. East Union hosted Individual Speech Events for the first time in over 32 years! It truly took a village to pull this event together.

East Union Fine Arts Department is excited to have the opportunity to bring Des Moines Metro Opera Iowa to our auditorium. Wednesday, March 6th @ 7pm the Opera Iowa will perform Beauty And The Beast. This event is free to the public. In conjunction with the evening performance, students will receive a performance during school hours of Sid The Serpent along with Masterclasses. This event is made possible by our Fine Arts Grant received this year.
Mr. Walsh's Integrated Math 2 classes are learning the three basic trigonometry functions - sine, cosine, and tangent. A practical application of trigonometry is finding unknown measurements. The students used inclinometers and string to find the angle of elevation and the distance from the light pole to determine the height of the pole.
Note: the tangent is defined as the ratio of the opposite and adjacent legs.
Friday our FFA Chapter finished celebrating National FFA Week with a visit from Senator Ernst. Our chapter highlighted some wonderful examples of how we are learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, and living to serve.. #RivertoRiverTour #FFA #MoreThanCowsAndPlows
Tuesday, February 20th Mrs. Craig and her Spanish IV students just finishing up a chapter on careers and community service. They went to Central Iowa Shelter and Services in Des Moines. The students were rock stars with serving lunch.
This week, East Union’s iJAG program attended Spring Manufacturing Day, hosted by DMACC! Students had the opportunity to tour a working Tool & Die Lab, as well as get hands on experience in a Welding Lab. After the tour, they listened to a Q&A from employers in the field!

DOOR MONITOR - This person keeps Centers running smoothly and on time; crosses off performances as they happen.
TIMEKEEPER - This person gets to watch several performances in one center and is responsible for making sure students adhere to the performance time requirements.

National FFA Week is officially underway at East Union. Today we kicked off with Red (International) vs Green (John Deere). Students drove their tractors to school. Tomorrow is Farmers Feed America. You are encouraged to dress up in read, white, and blue. Thursday wear your FFA shirt (blue or gold), and Friday is Farmer Flannel- Dress like your favorite farmer.
Today our speech students traveled to Indianola for Pride of Iowa speech contest. It was a beautiful day and students performed very well. We have a few days to fine tune things to perfection. They will be back in action on Saturday, February 24th right here at EU!

We had a Pride of Iowa outstanding performer, which is the best of the best in their category. Brock Driskill did an outstanding job in spontaneous speaking!
Performing and receiving a division I, outstanding rating were Khloe Parker (radio news), Brock Driskill (spontaneous speaking), Rebecca Young (storytelling and literary program).

We had a few students out sick. We are hopeful they can join us Saturday. It was a great day of speech!

High School Track practice gets underway tomorrow, 2/20. Reminder to bring warm clothes and be prepared to be outside.
Junior High practices will start after Spring Break. Each coach will be holding meetings in the coming weeks to get more information out.
